Mooresville Church of Christ

The oldest Church of Christ building
in the State of Alabama

The Mooresville church of Christ has an amazing history. It is a story of courage, cooperation, conviction and continuance. With a desire to use the Bible alone as their religious guide, the Mooresville Church of Christ began in 1851 and began worshiping on the newly purchased property that three years later would become home to the new church building. In 1854, the charming white, wooden, one-room meeting house was completed. At present, it is the oldest church of Christ building in the state of Alabama still on its original foundation. Through all these years, it has stood as a symbol of what the Lord can do when hearts are receptive to His guidance. It has provided a place for the truths of the Bible to be preserved and taught. It has served as a safe haven of unity for “slave” and “free”, “yanks” and “rebels”. It even welcomed a future President of the United States, James Garfield, to its pulpit. In this current time of racial, political and religious animosity, the Mooresville church of Christ building reminds us that we can put away our differences and become one harmonious body in the Lord.

Mission

One of the missions of the Mooresville Church of Christ Renovation is to create a modern facility from a Historically Important building and to use the facility for a place to gather in person and online to learn and experience more of God’s messages. While Garfield may not have preached on the topic of unity during the Civil War times, we believe unity is a very relevant message for today.

Exciting Future

Once the renovations are complete, the Historic Mooresville Church will be available for a wide range of events. For example, we plan to host:

  • Lectureships

  • Church History Training

  • Bible Classes

  • Acapella Singings

  • Weddings

  • Gospel Meetings

  • Community Events

As the area around Mooresville continues to grow, there is a renewed determination to utilize the restored building for the glory of God, evangelistic outreach and church growth.

Discover & Learn
about the History

James Garfield

Preached during the Union encampment,
James A. Garfield, a Union general and gospel
preacher was invited to come preach to the Mooresville brethren. In a letter to his wife he wrote:
"There is a church in the village of Mooresville
near by and they have sent up inviting me to speak to them on Sunday. If I am not to
unwell I have a notion to speak to them."[22]
Apparently he was well enough to speak. The
brethren of Mooresville boast, even today, of him having spoken in their building.
